W T Feaster is a group that hails from Indianapolis, Indiana. This band is poised to go beyond their hometown in a big way. Currently they are entertaining many offers from around the world. You'll get the exclusive here once the deals have been signed. You'll want to keep an one on this band. They've got a great vibe going with their main songwriter Travis Feaster. He's good the good based on a steady diet of blues and soul. Travis spent a few minutes with me today to chat about what's goining on in his world.
Kelly Dunn: How long have you been an independent artist?
WT Feaster: About three years I have been doing this as my profession.
Kelly Dunn: How did you get started?
WT Feaster: I really liked to learn other people's songs and then I started to realized that other people would like to hear my songs too.
Kelly Dunn: What kind of cover songs?
WT Feaster: Robert Cray I really like. I love Van Morrision's writing style. One of the most under-rated songwriters is Jimi Hendrix. There is so much great songwriting there.
Kelly Dunn: So over the years you just developing your own style?
WT Feaster: It was a gradual thing, songwriting. The sense of accomplishment. I get a natural high, you want to do it again, you know? (Laughs)
Kelly Dunn: What kind of guitars do you own?
WT Feaster: I usually play Stratocaster but I just bought a Les Paul. I just Don Grosh guitar. The model I have is Retro Classic and based on the old Strat design. The guitar, you just can't say enough about it. It feels great!
Kelly Dunn: What guage strings do you use?
WT Feaster: I like the 11-48 guage strings.
Kelly Dunn: What kind of amps are you using?
WT Feaster: I use a Rivera 55 and Marshall JPM 45.
Kelly Dunn: What's the story on the Rivera?
WT Feaster:It's a cool two-channel amp that has a Marshall and Fender sound. I have speaker cabinets that are by Mills Acoustics. They have a fantastic sound.
Kelly Dunn: How is the Mills different from other cabinets?
WT Feaster: Well, the lows are more articulate and the highs are great. Lot's of speaker cabinets have a wierd, flat mid-range sound that I don't like too much.
Kelly Dunn: How do you start your songs?
WT Feaster: There are two types of songs I like. But usually I'll start with a cool guitar riff. But other times I'll come up with lyrics but most times it's the guitar lick. Usually I'll have an over-all idea for a song, like the song, "Walk On". For that song I wrote a verse and it ended up becoming the third verse. You end up removing so manys lines during the creation of a song. There are so many lines that don't make it into the final version.
Kelly Dunn: Where are you performing?
WT Feaster: We are performing in Indianpolis area. Soon, we'll be performing in the Mid-West area. There are some opportunities to play in Michigan too!
Kelly Dunn: Where did record your lastest CD.
WT Feaster: We recorded it Michael Graham at The Lodge. He's worked with the Goo Goo Dolls and Atlantis. He used to work in LA but he moved back to the Midwest better. When you record it's work, I don't mind doing it, but this place is so cool because of the vibe this place has. It use to be an old Masonic lodge hence the name. The rooms are all wood and huge. The lighting is great and it just makes for a comfortable experience. He won't let you put a bad tone on your record.
Kelly Dunn: Was the studio price pretty good?
WT Feaster: The studio time is under $100 per hour. That's an excellent price for the high-level professional sound we get. As a side note, the pre-amps were purchased from Donald Fagen from Steely Dan. We were amazed just looking at this equipment and thinking of all the hit songs that came from this equipment. To think that we used the same equipment that Steely Dan used for all of their hit records is a cool thing! (Laughs)
Kelly Dunn: Where can people go to purchase your CD?
WT Feaster: iTunes and CDBaby.com are the big ones. But I recommend CDBaby.com. Once you go to CDBaby.com, in the search field, type, "Feaster", that will take you to our page. You can also get our CD's at our live shows too! (Laughs)
Kelly Dunn: What's the best thing about playing your own music in the public?
WT Feaster: The immediate reaction is the best thing that I can happen to me. The rush of excitement when you are in front of an audience and they are really getting into it. There's nothing better!
Kelly Dunn: Where can people go to purchase your CD?
WT Feaster: iTunes but I recommend CDBaby.com. If you type in Feaster that will take you to our page. You can also get our CD's at our live shows too! (Laughs)
Kelly Dunn: Feaster, it's been a pleasure speaking with you today.
