By Kelly Dunn
Kahra is an up and coming artist, singer/songwriter. I contacted her a few months ago about her music and we agreed to meet and discuss her music career. Her music evokes different images and mindsapes with each track. She seems to have a keen sense about making music that is brings the listener in to her world. The world is her oyster, waiting to be opened and explored. You'll be hearing more from the artist in the near future!
Kelly Dunn: How did you songwriting career begin...
Kahra: I started out singing and playing piano at church. Also, I was taking private vocal lessons for many years. And occured to me that I really wanted to pursue this singing thing. One day my friend told me that I should start writing my own songs, she was like, "How are you going to get known if you don't write your own stuff!" I was like "Right!" (laughter) So all through college I was getting A's and performing out with bands. I played violin when I was young but a friend of mine said I would look hotter if I played guitar. (long laughter)
Kelly Dunn: Yeah, that's it, guitar, matching earrings...
Kahra: That's it! You can quote me on this, "Playing guitar ruins your fingernails! (laughter) I had to cut them off when I started learning guitar...
Kelly Dunn: That is the draw back, no long nails!.. What inspires you to write songs?
Kahra: It has always amazed me that different people can look at the same subject and come up with something totally different. I usually find some kind of cool phrase that hits me to and I type it into my phone.
Kelly Dunn: Just text message your thoughts?
Kahra: It's excellent! You know if I'm out and somebody says something really cool then I type it into my phone! Or if I get an idea I'll call my answering answering machine and sing the melody. When I get home I can play it back and it's good to go! Hey, you never know when inspiration hits so I have to capture it. I've learned to type it right away or I'll forget it. Also, my new phone has a voice recorder that captures my thoughts and ideas. That's a great thing too!
Kelly Dunn: Do you text message alot?
Kahra: I use to but they charged me up the wazoo! It gets annoying when people are text messaging with me. I usually tell my girlfriends, "Hey! Listen. I never see you! I never see you! Put that thing away!" (laughter)
Kelly Dunn: What you do is take the phone and drop it in a glass of water!
Kahra: Oh yeah, people would go on a muderous rampage! (laughter) People can call me!
Kelly Dunn: What brought you from Chicago down to Miami, Florida.
Kahra: Well, I was finishing up at the University of Iowa and I was at a concert to see, "Inner Circle". You know the song, "Bad boys, bad boys, what'cha ya gonna do"... Well the guy said he was starting an artist development agency and he knew of a great vocal coach down in MIami. He said I should go down and check it out. After going down there I got my internship. The voice teacher and I both went to Iowa so we hit it off really well. She has brought my voice so far along. From doing Broadway to doing more Pop music.
Kelly Dunn: When you write what instrument to do you prefer.
Kahra: The way it's been working right now is the producers give me some tracks and I put melody and words to it. I enjoy it because I'm trying to figure out what the music is trying to say. That's how my song, "Catch 22" came about. I think I was reading a book and I was thinking about my love life, or lack thereof! (laughter)
Kelly Dunn: I'm looking at your photo's and you hair is unique...
Kahra: I was getting ready for the photo shoot and the photographer thought they looked pretty interesting so we shot some pictures with the curlers in my hair!
Kelly Dunn: It's an interesting look, I like it!
Kahra: We were just doing it as a joke but then we say the pics and they looked really different.
Kelly Dunn: You look like Betty Grable, the pin-up girls from the 40's...
Kahra: That's awesome! That's a great thing.
Kelly Dunn: What's your future plans...
Kahra: We are working on getting a great product, we've got an investor with our own studio. We are cutting alot of songs.
Kelly Dunn: It takes the pressure off when you don't have to worry about the money...
Kahra: I does! It's a great thing. We can just concentrate on the music and we don't have to worry so much about the bills.
Kelly Dunn: So you like it in Florida?
Kahra: Yes! It's so warm outside. After we're done here I'm going to go take a run.
Kelly Dunn: Just get up and run?
Kahra: Well, I have to keep in shape! You have to keep your look and keep thin...
Kelly Dunn: Are you looking for a label or are you thinking of staying indendent?
Kahra: I'm thinking about how the Internet has helped us and MySpace.
Kelly Dunn: So you've been writing since 2000?
Kahra: We are trying to get to the point that we can do this full time. I think alot of people don't work hard enough before they get out there.
Kelly Dunn: I think your songs have a good vibe to them. I think you are going to do something with your music and I wish for all the good things in the world to come your way!
Kahra: Thanks so much for meeting me today. This has been a great experience and hopefully we'll do this again soon! Tell everyone at SongwriterPro that I said hello. If I'm playing in your area please come to our concert!
