Megan Connor is a songwriter living in Nashville, Tennessee. Her talents as a lyricists have taken her to the A-List of artists in Nashville. Her spunk and quick-wit are sure to have this songwriter with a long future. I would go so far as to say she will be mentioned with all the great songwriters one day. For now, she's grabbing attention and headlines whenever she performs or one of her songs are played. Megan is what
SongwriterPro: So what's on your schedule this week?
Megan: Well, I a big show coming up on Wenesday night at 3rd and Lindsey. It's not really a showcase but it's an hour long show for the general public. What else do you want to know Mr. Kelly! (Laughs)
SongwriterPro: How did you get onto the songwriting line of work?
Megan Connor: You know, I have always written songs since I was young. I was living in New York City. I was there doing theatre and fitness. Fitness is such a great business in which you can affect so many lives. So, I developed this dance class where I just sang and dance for the entire routine. It just so happend that the CFO of BMI took my class. He said you need to develop this into something more in Nashville. From there I began writing lyrics in New York and Nashville. Now I am writing with some of the top people in Nashville since I moved here.
SongwriterPro: Was it a big adjustment moving from New York to Nashville?
Megan Connor: Oh yes! (Laughs) It was such a change of pace for me. New York just has it owns thing going on and Nashville is just a different pace. The people are different, and I have to say I almost moved back to New York because I missed the energy. But I stayed here and I have never regretted it since!
SongwriterPro: You don't seem to have a picked up Souther drawl or an accent since moving from New York...
Megan Connor: I know! You'd think I would since I'm living here. I grew up in Texas since I was 3 years old. Then later on I moved to New York in my teens.
SongwriterPro: What was it like growing up in Texas?
Megan Connor: Hot! The weather is so hot down there it is unbelievable. I think Texas is such a great place. A lot of Texans think of the state as it's own little country. I have met so many good people there.
SongwriterPro: Where do you get your song inspirations?
Megan Connor: Sometimes it's life experiences, something that I have lived through, or I'll get something through the news, bouncing ideas off of other songwriters. There is so much going on in the world, life is saturated with ideas that if you have your eyes and ears open you can find something! The thing is if you are going to write a song do it in a new, fresh way that has already been said.
SongwriterPro: We really like the song, "No Road Map", that's a great song.. Were you driving when you got the idea?
Megan Connor: Thank you! I co-wrote that one with my producer Chris Stevens, Chirstopher Stevens. He's a big Christian songwriter. (He won a Dove Award Page & BMI Page with Toby McKeehan) I'm just so honored to have written with him. As for the song, the idea just popped in my head about living my life without a road map. Sometimes I feel like I'm living my life without a roadmap at the moment. Sometimes I just want to go...
SongwriterPro:: I would have to say you have the right business plan...Do you think the Internet has made music a whole new ballgame?
Megan Connor: Thank you! I co-wrote that one with my producer Chris Stevens, Chirstopher Stevens. He's a big Christian songwriter. (He won a Dove Award Page & BMI Page with Toby McKeehan) I'm just so honored to have written with him. As for the song, the idea just popped in my head about living my life without a road map. Sometimes I feel like I'm living my life without a roadmap at the moment. Sometimes I just want to go...
SongwriterPro::What's going on in Nashville?
Megan Connor: Well, you can't plan anything. If you work your tail off everyday and hope you'll be at the right place at the right time.
Kristin: We record most of our music on Edison Street in Chicago. They are a great bunch of people.
SongwriterPro:: Sometimes dreams are built on quicksand...
Megan Connor: That's funny! I have a song I named, "Quicksand". (Laugh) It's interesting that I have a shot at this. It's really cool. If, after so many years, that nothing happens with my career and I get to take with me all these amazing songs I'd very happy.
SongwriterPro: How do you finance this adventure?
Megan Connor: I have some investors that finance my career. I told myself that if I move to Nashville that I was not going to work a part-time job. I'm a very independent person. I do some personal physical fitness on the side but mostly. I'm working with Craig Wiseman authors
SongwriterPro: What would say are some of your benchmarks since moving to Nashville.
Megan Connor: I think to be published here in Nashville would be one of my great achievements. Don Goodman and his publisher. Don wrote so many hits like, Ring on My Finger, Old Red, Angels Among Us, he's one of the 80 top songwriters of all-time. Just coming in as a writer, to be paid to write is an amazing thing!
SongwriterPro: Do you prefer performing as a solo or with a band.
Megan Connor: I like the local songwriter nights. Getting up there with other songwriters is really a great time. The audiences just go crazy. But, I'm really more of a full-band girl. I like to energy that is created with a band. To get up on stage to sing all of my songs for an hour with a band is really neat.
SongwriterPro: Are you going on the road soon?
Megan Connor: That would be great but it would be much better to get a record deal. I'm working on a big deal rght now. But, if I don't get signed with a big label then I'll have the money to do it on my own.
SongwriterPro: So you are approaching your career as a two-prong attack?
Megan Connor: Sure, I really like to write for others but I think to go out and perform as my own artist would be
SongwriterPro: Were you in the studio when Linda Davis recorded your song, "My Amazing Grace"?
Megan Connor: No, I was in Montana doing a show when she recorded the song in Nashville. I would have loved to have been there for that session. She did an amazing job and I cried. The song is about a women finds out that she is pregnant and the baby has Down's Syndrome. The women decides to keep the baby. It's a touching story. Linda is a very respected artist and for her to get behind the song was very touching for me.
SongwriterPro: Anything else going on in Nashville?
Megan Connor: NSAI, if you are a songwriter you need to become a member. They are so positve with my songs that I highly recommend them.
SongwriterPro: Megan, it's been a fast hour, I hope we can do this again soon!
